The Fetter

The set of illustrations take labyrinth man as main character, labyrinth man represent persons with depressive disorder, the labyrinths in his body is just as if they are always lost and trapped in their own negative emotions. The little colorful persons surrounding the labyrinth man sometimes represent spectators, sometimes represent expression of emotion of patients with depressive disorder. While these cubes with stings represent the overall circumstance in which we live.

The works is initially to express that labyrinth man is trapped in the cage of environment, while speculators are able to freely control to adapt to environment. However after several drafts, both structure and colors or elements, as well as the original concept fail to satisfy me. Therefore I try to escape the thinking dilemma, totally redo it: pink men are trapped in water failing to move, or unwilling to leave the water, although speculators are not free and relaxed, they still try to escape from the cage, which is the psychology difference between patients with depressive disorder and non depressive disorder.

the labyrinth man lift a balance scale difficultly because he was trapped in water can’t move. this water is flowing from the hole of this large cube, and this large cube is lifted from these 3 pink mans who were sitting on the center of the balance. on this side of the balance scale, there is a cube prison closed a lot of pink mans. No matter how struggling the mans tried to escape from the prison, The balance scale is tilted to the man lying leisurely. It is like the scale of love, where if one side give too much and was too heavy, sometimes it didn’t work, the other side would easy to press down and feel arrogant. in other words, it reflects a kind of social reality. there is "social class”in society. No matter how hard underclass tried, they still can’t surpass middle class. and these 3 pink mans represent upper class in society. they are sitting on the center of the balance. they are the chairman of the society. No matter how the balance swings, they never be influenced. the large cube and the flowing water represent social surrounding. the social being create the surrounding impacted Depressed Patient. and this surrounding box up the Depressed Patient and make him can’t overcome depression. but the surrounding is not the cause of depression. The labyrinth of his body represents the pressure that Depressed Patient give to himself. he always trapped in his wrong thinking circle, and because of his own reason make him can’t overcome depression. well, the pink line and the sting represent the way of useless self-healing of Depressed Patient. the sting come from the fetter, and the pink line behind the sting represent the sting run through the labyrinth. he mistakenly thought his self-healing help him got rid of depression. but actually it didn’t work. the fetter was still trapped Depressed Patient, he didn’t recovery. in some ways, i just want to encourage Depressed Patient when they suffer from depression, they have to ask a professional doctor for help.

The structure of the works was completed very rapidly. The little men fails to cease, and fails to stop rope skipping, if they cease, they will die. Color matching confused me for a long time.

I want to express from the works that inward worlds of labyrinth man always surprise speculators, while it is a agony for labyrinth man to expose their inward worlds.

What the works expresses is that speculators are always interesting in something which labyrinth persons do not want to reveal to others, but, speculators are blind to something which labyrinth man is eager to let others know.
